AUTO INSURANCE GUIDE
Bodily Injury Liability - This is the amount the insurance company will pay if you hurt a person(s) for their medical, loss of wages and pain and suffering. The New York State Minimum is 25/50, meaning $25,000 per person and a maximum of $50,000 per accident. By today's standards, it is better to carry at least 100/300 or 250/500.
Property Damage Liability - This is the amount we will pay if you have an at fault accident and cause damage to property. New York State requires a minimum of $10,000 in property damage coverage. Although that is all NYS DMV requires, it is better to carry AT LEAST $50,000 in property damage liability. If you were to total someone else's brand new $45,000 car, can you come up with the extra $35,000 not covered by the $10,000 minimum?
Medical Payments - You have medical payments coverage involved in an accident where you or a passenger is injured, it will pay up to the amount of medical payments purchased for each of you. All of your vehicles have $5,000 in medical payments.
Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury - This coverage protects you in the event you are involved in an accident with an uninsured/underinsured motorist for bodily injury. You may receive payment for medical, loss of wages, and pain and suffering. The amount usually matches the bodily injury coverage.
Collision - Should you hit another car or an object such as a telephone pole, collision provides physical damage protection to your automobile. You may purchase collision with various deductibles (the amount you pay to get your vehicle fixed). The higher your deductible, the less premium you pay for collision. For example, if you are in an accident and the damage to your car is $1500 and your deductible is $500, the insurance company will reimburse you the amount over the deductible, $1000.
Comprehensive - When your vehicle is damaged other than by a collision, your vehicle may be fixed by comprehensive coverage. Losses such as broken windshields, theft, vandalism, fire, wind and storm damage are frequent claims covered by comprehensive. The higher your deductible, the less premium you pay for comprhensive. Comprehensive coverage usually is combined with full glass coverage, in which the insurance company will pay for any broken glass on the vehicle WITHOUT a deductible. For example, if you carry a $500 ded, the insurance company will reimburse you the amount over the deductible, $1000.
Rental Reimbursement - If you purchase rental reimbursement, the insurance company will help you cover the cost of a rental vehicle, up to the amount you select when you have a covered collision or comprehensive loss to your vehicle.
Towing and Labor - When your vehicle is disabled due to a flat tire or mechanical failure, the insurance company will reimburse you for towing or emergency road service. This also includes things such as lock-outs and dead batteries.
